THE tight track and the weather are the only concerns for Nash Rawiller as he prepares to pilot emerging import Junoob in Saturday's Kirks Doomben Cup.
Rawiller rode Junoob, who joins Moriarty in giving trainer Chris Waller a shot at a third Doomben Cup in five years, to fourth in the Hollindale Stakes a fortnight ago.
"Every corner he lost three lengths," Rawiller said.
"He didn't appreciate the tight turning track. He will also be better when he can get traction on a dry track."
Doomben managed to dodge the deluge that wiped out the second half of yesterday's Sunshine Coast meeting and course manager Jim Roberts will even consider irrigating today.
"They are predicting a few showers between now and Saturday, but that happened last week and it didn't arrive so I'm a bit between a rock and a hard place at the moment," he said.
"We could get a few showers between now and Saturday and it won't affect the track."
There is a prediction for showers today, tomorrow and Saturday, but Roberts said Doomben had the capacity to dry out quickly because it had not had any serious rainfall for a fortnight.
The drying track was music to Rawiller's ears, so his lone concern is how Junoob will handle Doomben.
"I'm reasonably confident,'' he said. "I would just like him to get on a better surface and be able to balance a bit better around the turns.
"My only concern on Saturday would be the small track again. He's a big striding horse (but) he's become a bit more adaptable, you can ride him on pace.
"He's got really good ability, which takes him a long way."
While not regarded as a vintage edition of the cup, it promises to be a spirited betting race.
Up-and-comers Leebaz and Junoob will take on the proven weight-for-age mare Streama and the rejuvenated Akzar.
Darren Weir reported Akzar touched down without incident in Brisbane yesterday and went straight to his feed bin after being stabled. TattsBet has him only a touch behind Streama and Leebaz.
Gerald Ryan made the decision to pay the late entry fee for Angel Of Mercy, who, like Junoob, is far superior on a firmer track.
Waller won last year's Doomben Cup with Beaten Up and also the 2010 renewal with Metal Bender.
Junoob has similarities to Rawiller's previous Doomben Cup winner Mawingo, being a first-season import coming off races below the top level. Mawingo ran third in the Hollindale but took benefit from his first Australian weight-for-age start to topple more fancied rivals at Doomben.
