LLOYD Williams has finally snared the elusive Caulfield Cup - now he is trying to win his first Cox Plate and a record fifth Melbourne Cup.

The high profile owner is set to have at least four runners in the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup as he attempts a rare clean sweep of Melbourne's spring carnival majors.

Fawkner gave Williams his first Caulfield Cup when he stormed to a famous victory at Caulfield last Saturday. The grey could now join the owner's army of talented stayers being prepared for the Cox Plate and Melbourne Cup.

Williams also has Green Moon, Sea Moon, Masked Marvel and Seville among entries for the $3 million Cox Plate (2040m) at Moonee Valley next Saturday.

"Fawkner is still in the Cox Plate but we will just see how he recovers from his Caulfield Cup win,'' said the owner's son, Nick Williams said.

"It is not a lock that Green Moon, Sea Moon, Masked Marvel and Seville will run in the Cox Plate, either.''

Williams said his father will make the final decision on how many runners he will have in the Cox Plate later today.

Lloyd Williams is yet to win the nation's weight-for-age championship but he has had three second placegetters with Mahogany (1995) and Zipping (2008, 2010), while Zipping also ran third in 2009.

Fawkner has 53kg in the $6 million Melbourne Cup (3200m) at Flemington on November 5 but is eligible for a penalty after his Caulfield Cup win.

He is now on track to join some of the greats of Australian racing to complete the coveted Caulfield Cup-Melbourne Cup double. The only horses to achieved the feat are Poseidon (1906), The Trump (1937), Rivette (1939), Rising Fast (1954), Even
Stevens (1962), Galilee (1966), Gurner's Lane (1982), Let's Elope (1991), Doriemus (1995), Might And Power (1997) and Ethereal (2001).

Racing Victoria's chief handicapper Greg Carpenter will announce Fawkner's penalty today.

Carpenter was tight-lipped about Fawkner's likely re-handicap but most expect he will get a 1.5kg or 2kg penalty.

"It is a different challenge in the Melbourne Cup because there is a whole new lot of horses that haven't run in the Caulfield Cup,'' Carpenter said.

"There are a number of his stablemates as well as the internationals.''

Lloyd Williams has already raced a record four Melbourne Cup winners Just A Dash (1982), What A Nuisance (1985), Efficient (2007) and Green Moon (2012) and in his quest for a fifth win in the race that stops the nation, he could be represented by as many as six stayers - Fawkner, Green Moon, Sea Moon, Masked Marvel, Seville and possibly Mourayan.

"This next two weeks has a shocking habit of having an unbelievable attrition rate so I'm wary of answering that,'' Nick Williams said when asked how many runners they will have in the Melbourne Cup,.

"But all the horses you have seen in the last two or three weeks are in good health.

"They will have to have some serious gallops and another race before the Melbourne Cup. We will run them if they are fit and well.''

The only owner to win all three Melbourne majors at the same spring carnival was Leicester Spring, who raced the great Rising Fast, winner of the 1954 Caulfield Cup-Cox Plate-Melbourne Cup treble.

TAB's Glenn Munsie said he rates Williams a $21 chance to clean sweep the three majors this spring.

"He could have as many as five Cox Plate runners and potentially a quarter of the field in the Melbourne Cup - that's unheard of,'' Munsie said.

"Realistically, it will be tough for one of his horses to win the Cox Plate against the big four - Atlantic Jewel, Fiorente, It's A Dundeel ad Puissance De Lune - but the Melbourne Cup is a different story because all his satyers are in great form and have been specifically aimed at the one race.''
