City coach ... Brad Fittler says City v Country fixture must stay. Source: Gregg Porteous / News Limited
City Origin coach and NSW legend Brad Fittler says it is imperative City v Country stays as a long term fixture on the rugby league calendar as it provides a genuine audition for the New South Wales State of Origin side.
"Where we are with Origin at the moment, we need to be thinking in advance," told foxsports.com.au.
Is it time City-Country was scrapped?
"The opposition has done a lot better than we have. Getting the support from Cary (NSW Rugby League CEO Geoff Carr) is enormous because he's under a lot of pressure.

"I think the game will look after itself purely from an entertainment point of view. If we get to pick the players we want and the players want to be there then the game will stand-up."
Fittler rubbished suggestions that the fixture should be scrapped despite a host of big name players withdrawing from Sunday's game.
"I refer to the game as a trial," Fittler said.
"Sometimes it's a trial for this year's Origin side, other times it's a trial for players in the future and I think the reality of where club footy is at, the intensity levels and what the blokes put their bodies through.
"Someone like Robbie Farah, who has been playing for the last five years and been our best for the last two or three, if he has any sort of little injury, I see it as a good opportunity because he will probably be the Origin hooker, he can rest up and we can blood some of the other kids.
"This is where you might find a couple of those diamonds in the rough, it gives a few blokes a chance like I did when I was 18. Someone saw something in what I could do and if they play with the old rules they had backed then I wouldn't have the luck I've had.
"Curtis Sironen and James Tedesco are two real young fellas but I have no doubt that this week's going to benefit them enormously.
"There are seven debutants, it's really refreshing. I see it as everyone wins, I don't see it as a negative at all.
"Both sides have things to play for and hopefully they have pride in where they come from and see it as a good opportunity to represent their area."
