Scans have confirmed that Melbourne Victory midfielder Gui Finkler has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament and will require a reconstruction, ruling him out of action for 12 months.

Finkler sustained the injury in the opening moments of the Victory's 2-1 loss to Western Sydney Wanderers on Tuesday at Parramatta Stadium.

A statement on the Victory's website confirmed the worst news on Wednesday evening.

"It has now been confirmed that Finkler has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and while there was no other damage to the knee, he will require a reconstruction," the statement read.

The Brazilian playmaker, who tops the A-League in assists, took to Twitter express his devastation.

It is not yet known when Finkler will go under the knife.
